Marie Michaud

Marie (Brulotte) Michaud, age 88, passed away Monday, June 7, 2010 at the Kimwell Skilled Nursing Rehabilitation Center in Fall River, MA. Born on July 13, 1921, in Fall River, she was the daughter of the late Gedeon Brulotte, formerly of Levis, Quebec and the late Elise (Dube) Brulotte.

She married the late Ferdinand Joseph Michaud (“Ferdie”), son of the late Henri and Josephine (Hamel) Michaud, on August 9, 1952, at St. Mathieu’s Church.  For nearly fifty years, Marie and Ferdie made their home at 254 Stetson Street in Fall River, MA.  They were parishioners of St. Roch’s Church.

Marie is survived by a daughter, Claire Louis of Ocean Grove, NJ; granddaughters, Lydia and Nadia Louis; sisters, Eva Costa and Irene Richardson; brothers, Normand and Arthur; and numerous nieces and nephews.  She was the sister of the late Yvonne Jones, Alice Tremblay, Ernest, Joseph and Albert.

One of ten children of a French-Canadian family that settled in the North End of Fall River in the early 1900’s, Marie (Brulotte) Michaud, with her dimples and mischievous grin, was a force of nature who undertook no task with less than a full heart.  Whether she was picking countless pails of wild blueberries to sell door to door to pay for her St. Mathieu’s Elementary School uniform or whether she was toiling well past midnight to stitch clothing for her daughter’s dolls, Marie did not relent until the job was done to the very best of her ability.  Recently reflecting on her life, Marie affirmed: “I always did my best.”

Marie loved style and dreamed of becoming a fashion designer.  She was her own favorite couturiere, selecting fine wool and cotton fabrics from which she meticulously crafted for herself the dressed and suits which so aptly set off her glamorous, raven-haired looks.

Marie worked as a floor lady in the city’s dressmaking industry, including the former Wentworth Manufacturing, Inc., and Harlee Manufacturing, Inc., which thrived in Fall River before and after World War II.  Marie and the ladies of her production unit were a formidable team, consistently producing large quantities of high-quality garments.

Marie subsequently taught dressmaking in the evening adult education program at the former Fall River Girl’s Diman Vocational High School.  She also taught hand sewing at many of the public elementary schools in the city.  At least one of her students-perhaps inspired by Marie’s passion for sewing-went on to enjoy a successful career in the international fashion industry.

Each summer Marie’s granddaughters, Lydia and Nadia Louis, traveled from New Jersey to stay with Marie and her late husband, Ferdie. Lydia and Nadia fondly remember the many excursions with their grandparents to “Chuck E. Cheese,” Buttonwood Park Zoo, the Fall River Public Library, and the Carousel at Battleship Cove.  When it was time for the girls to leave on Labor Day, it was all Marie could do to fight back the tears.  As their parents drove them away, the girls exclaimed: “We love you big like the world, Memere”! And we do.

Marie’s funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 10, 2010 at 9:00AM from the BOULE FUNERAL HOME, 615 Broadway, Fall River, MA followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00AM in Holy Name Church, Hanover Street, Fall River.  Interment will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Fall River.  Visitation will be held Wednesday from 2:00PM to 4:00PM and 7:00PM to 9:00PM.
